📖 "How NEPA Ruined My Proposal – A True Lagos Story"

If you’ve ever lived in Nigeria, then you already know — when NEPA (or should I say “DISCO” now) decides to show you pepper, nothing in this life is safe. Not even your love life.

So here’s how NEPA decided to humble me.

Last Saturday, I finally decided to propose to my babe. After 3 years of dating, several heartbreaks, fights over jollof rice, and surviving Detty Decembers together — it was time. I planned it down to the last detail like I was organizing Coachella.

Venue: My small but neat apartment in Lekki Phase 2.

Lighting: Candles, soft LED bulbs, mood-setting.

Soundtrack: Burna Boy’s “For My Hand” on repeat.

Food: Small chops from one trusted plug.

Camera: My guy Tunde came with his iPhone 14 Pro Max to help me “document the moment.”

Everything was smooth. Babe showed up looking like a goddess — face beat, gele tied like she was going to an owambe after. I served her juice (not spiked), and the moment felt right.

Then… it was time.

I stood up.

Took the ring out.

Looked her in the eye.

Went down on one knee.

As I opened the ring box…

PHAAAM!

NEPA took light.

I thought it was part of the plan.

It wasn't.

In one second, the whole room turned into a black hole.

The candle I lit for "romantic effect" got blown out by fan breeze just before the light went off — so we were left with pure darkness. Not “mood lighting” — actual confusion.

My babe shouted “Jesus!”

Tunde (my camera guy) shouted “Yeeeh!”

The small chops guy outside was banging the door because he couldn’t find his way back.

And me?

I was still on one knee. In darkness. Ring in hand. Sweating like I just finished a Lagos marathon.

Then I heard it. The sound of something tiny rolling away on the tiled floor.

It was the ring. 😭

It had fallen from my hand and disappeared under the chair.

Now I’m crawling in the dark, looking for a ring with my phone torch, sweating, muttering “Oh God, not today…” while my babe is asking if this was part of the proposal script.

30 minutes later, we found the ring.

She said “yes”… but I’m 8

9% sure it was out of pity.

And guess what?

NEPA brought the light back 3 minutes after we finished eating.

💡 Moral of the story:

Dear Lagos boys, if you want to propose to your babe in Nigeria:

Don’t trust NEPA.

Buy fuel.

Have a working gen.

Or better yet — do it at JJT Park during the day 😭

Because in this country, love is hard enough. Don’t let the power company disgrace you on top of it.
